Introduction to J-1 Visa Regulations

After you enter the United States using your DS-2019, you will be in J-1 “status.” This means that you are subject to the benefits and restrictions of the J-1 student category, which is different from other categories (such as tourist or employment categories).

The J-1 student category is part of the Exchange Visitor Program managed by the U.S. Department of State. Please review the Department of State’s Welcome Brochure to learn more about the Exchange Visitor Program.

It will be your responsibility to understand and comply with the terms of your status. ISS will provide you with resources and assistance. The next few slides will introduce you to the important documents related to your status.
