J-1 Visa

Sample J-1 visa
Your J-1 visa stamp must be valid in order to enter the U.S.
After you enter the U.S., it is okay for the visa to expire. If you travel outside the U.S. with an expired visa, you must apply for a new J-1 visa to reenter the U.S.
There are some exceptions to the rule requiring a valid J-1 visa, such as short trips under 30 days to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean islands. However, it is always recommended you consult an ISS adviser before you travel with an expired J-1 visa.
Canadian citizens do not need to apply for a J-1 visa stamp. They travel with a valid DS-2019 and passport.
