Dear University of Washington students,
Welcome to Autumn 2025. This message provides important information about new changes around registration and your transcript that are effective for the 2025–2026 academic year.
This guide contains information about adding, dropping, or withdrawing from any or all of your Autumn 2025 courses. You may not need these instructions until later in the quarter, so hold onto this email for future reference.
Autumn 2025 Registration Change Guide
We strongly encourage you to consult with your adviser or advising team before making any of the following changes to your schedule. ACCESS students must make any registration changes through the corresponding campus registration team.
Carefully review these instructions, deadlines, and links. A $20 Change of Registration fee is assessed for any number of add, drop, or change transactions. Use the UW Academic Calendar to identify when this affects you.
UW Academic Calendar 2025—2026
Review the University of Washington 2025–2026 UW Academic Calendar, especially the “Adding/ Dropping Courses or Complete Withdrawal” section, for Autumn 2025 deadlines.
Request a Religious Accommodation
It is the policy of the University to reasonably accommodate students’ religious observances. Learn more about the Religious Accommodations Policy.
Autumn 2025 Deadline: Friday, October 3, 2025 at 5 p.m.
Time Conflicts
Students who register for two classes which meet any portion of the same class time are responsible to meet the requirements of each course in terms of exams and instructor expectations.
Drop Courses From Your Schedule
Review the tuition forfeiture policy when considering course drops. You may not get all your tuition back, depending on when you drop.
Period | Fee | Transcript | Drops |
---|---|---|---|
Through Sep 30 End of Week 1 |
No fee charged | Course drops do not appear on your transcript | Add and drop courses freely using Register.UW. Withdrawal: Students who drop all their courses will have a withdrawal statement and the date of withdrawal posted to their transcript. |
Oct 1—7 Week 2 Unrestricted Drop Period |
$20 fee charged | Course drops do not appear on your transcript | You may continue to add and drop courses using Register.UW, but you will be charged a $20 Change of Registration fee for all registration changes made on a single day. Withdrawal: Students who drop all their courses will have a withdrawal statement and the date of withdrawal posted to their transcript. |
Oct 8—Dec 5 Week 3—Last Day of Instruction Late Course Drop Period |
$20 fee charged | Course drops appear on your transcript | You may drop one class yourself via Register.UW using the self-serve Quarterly Drop. Follow the same instructions as Week 2. To drop multiple classes or an additional class if you already used your Quarterly Drop, use the Adviser-Assisted Drop Request Form. Consult with your adviser, who must approve your schedule changes before your campus registration team completes the request. Each dropped course will appear on the transcript with a Registrar Drop (RD) annotation.
Additionally: Students whose enrollment depends on maintaining full-time status, including NCAA athletes and F-1/J-1 international students, may not be able to use the self-serve Quarterly Drop. In these cases, use the Adviser-Assisted Drop.

Withdraw Completely from the Quarter
Period | Fee | Transcript | Drops |
---|---|---|---|
Oct 8—Dec 5 Week 3—Last Day of Instruction |
No fee charged | Course drops appear on your transcript | To withdraw from all your courses, submit the Adviser-Assisted Drop Request Form. Students may not completely withdraw after December 5, 2025. Dropped courses will be noted on the transcript with an RD annotation, along with a withdrawal statement and the date of withdrawal. |
Registrar Drop (RD) Transcript Notation
Students who drop any courses beginning the third week of the quarter will have RD listed on their transcript for those courses.
Drop Courses from a Previous Quarter
The Former Quarter Drop (FQD) option lets students request to drop past-quarter courses due to uncontrollable extenuating circumstances which prevented you from using the Current Quarter drop process. There is a one-year submission deadline. If approved, an RD will appear on your transcript for these courses.
Please review the policy and eligibility requirements to determine if this is the right process for you. You may also consider speaking to an adviser to support you through this process if you have questions or need guidance with completing the FQD process.
S/NS Grading
Use the S/NS Grading Option Change Process by the last day of the quarter, December 12, to set your grade mode for eligible classes to S/NS or numeric grading.
Important! Proceed with caution when selecting S/NS grading. The petition allowing eligible and approved undergraduate students to switch back to numeric grading after the quarter ends will be under review during Autumn 2025, and this process may be discontinued.
Marking a course as S/NS means any requirement that the course might have fulfilled will still need to be completed later to graduate. We recommend you use S/NS grading sparingly. Petitions to revert to numeric grading from S/NS are approved in limited circumstances. After the last day of finals week, graduate students will not be able to change an S/NS grade to a numeric grade, as per scholastic regulation 110, 1.B section 5.
The $20 Change of Registration fee applies each time you request a grading option change. Based on your overall financial situation, if incurring the grade change fee creates a hardship, you may want to contact the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Registration Tampering Abuse Policy: Don’t buy, sell, trade, or hold spots in classes!
