Honors

The University of Washington recognizes several honors distinctions that are included on student transcripts.

In addition to the following baccalaureate honors, students may also be eligible for Annual and Quarterly Dean’s Lists.

Baccalaureate Honors

Baccalaureate honors (summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude) are awarded only to recipients of a first baccalaureate degree. These honors are earned by those students who have completed no fewer than 90 residence credits at this institution. At least 60 of the 90 credits must have been acquired on a numerically graded basis.

The University’s Honors Committee determines annually the grade-point requirement for each baccalaureate honor at each campus – Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma. In recent years, approximately ten percent of the students have been awarded baccalaureate honors. Distance Learning courses (those that include a DL prefix) are included in the UW cumulative GPA and therefore count toward baccalaureate honors.

Honorary Societies

In addition to the honors previously listed, students with distinguished academic records may participate in several of the following University-wide honorary societies, and specific college or school honorary societies. Information concerning specific college or school honorary societies appears in the respective sections of this catalog.

  • Golden Key National Honor Society. A national, nonprofit academic honors organization founded in 1977 for the purpose of recognizing and encouraging scholastic achievement among students from all academic fields. Membership is by invitation only.
  • Mortarboard. A national college senior honor society whose membership is based on scholarship, leadership, and service. The local Tolo chapter was founded in 1909 and became part of the national organization in 1925. Students of junior standing apply winter quarter for selection in spring quarter.
  • Phi Beta Kappa. A national collegiate honorary society, founded in 1776, with the Washington Alpha Chapter established in 1914. Phi Beta Kappa recognizes distinguished scholarship, especially in the acquisition of an education in the liberal arts and sciences. Additional information on honorary societies may be obtained from academic advisers and the respective campus representatives.

Grade Submission Resources

GradePage

GradePage is the official online grade submission tool for the UW. Any instructor of record (IoR) for a course section, or assigned grading delegate, can view the grade roster and easily submit grades for course sections while the grading period is open each quarter. GradePage is integrated with UW’s Canvas LMS providing an import process to reduce manual entry of grades. Instructors must submit final grades using GradePage. UW NetID and Duo 2FA are required to access GradePage.

Grade Submission Deadline

The grade submission deadline is always at 5 p.m. on the Tuesday following the final day of the quarter. The grade submission deadline is posted prominently in GradePage. Additionally, all grade deadlines are posted in the UW Academic Calendar.

GradePage: Grade Submission FAQs

GradePage: Grade Submission FAQs

When the grading period has opened for the quarter, log in to GradePage, select the course, and enter grades for each student.

Grades can only be submitted once via GradePage. Instructors and delegates cannot change or override grades that have already been submitted.

For more detailed instructions, please refer to the GradePage User Guides provided by UW-IT that are listed previously on this page.

The security of grade submission is taken seriously by the Registrar and its campus partners. Submitting grades online using GradePage represents a significant security improvement over a paper-based process. For example, online grade submission eliminates the need for people to process paper-based grades, which reduces unnecessary observation of or interference with grades.

All online grade submissions:

  • May only be made by the instructor(s) of record (IoR) or the approved delegates;
  • Are made over a secure Internet connection (https);
  • Are logged and archived to provide the audit trail required by the University’s Department of Audits.

There are a number of processes that rely upon student grade information, including Academic Drop cancellation, Honors calculations, student financial aid eligibility, prerequisite cancellation, and conferral of degrees.

Some of these processes (such as prerequisite cancellation) occur right after the grade submission deadline, so timely grade submission is important. Other processes occur soon after the grade submission deadline (within the week) and students and faculty need time to review their grades and correct any submission errors before the processes are run. Failure to submit grades by the deadline can result in a number of severe problems for students.

No. Once the grading period for the quarter ends, instructors cannot submit grades through GradePage. Please refer to the Change of Grade webpage for instructions to submit late grades.

Grades for off-calendar courses cannot be submitted through GradePage at this time. Please refer to the Change of Grade webpage for assistance. Enabling online submission for these courses is under review.

  • Use GradePage to view grades from the past four quarters.
  • The past online submissions history only displays grade values submitted using GradePage and does not reflect any subsequent changes made to the grade values after submission.
  • Instructors who need to reference an official final grade from a previous quarter not listed, or a grade submitted/modified through the OUR Change of Grade Request form, may contact the Credentials Team.

Yes, GradePage includes a grade delegate system for this purpose in exceptional circumstances.
